Amy, what are some favorite pastimes for families?
Mom, it may or may not surprise you that Honduran families are much like ours – they like to watch TV together on their mom’s bed (often because there is only one TV and only one bed)! Families cook and eat together, go to church, watch their children play soccer, and go swimming. Sundays are reserved for visiting grandparents and other extended relatives, much like we did when I was growing up (but replace brisket with roasted pork). Families are much bigger here with at least 5 children on average, and I mentioned before, family relations here are a bit confusing. Las Mangas is like one big, happy family! Thanks for your questions - one point for you!My super day of classes and our first night of parent teacher conferences went well. After teaching for 5 hours in El Pital, I hurried down to get ready to meet the parents of Las Mangas. More showed up than we expected (a representative from every family but one) so we had to quickly brew another pot of coffee. In all, 25 parents and a very successful evening.
I gave a quick presentation about myself and what the students are learning in English class all in Spanish and afterwards, my coworkers were impressed at my fluidity (minus the grammar) and improved confidence. Score! Amy 1, Honduras 0, Mom 1.
I also spoke to many of the parents about the possibility of having adult English classes. They were really interested, so I'll keep you posted on that.
To celebrate our successful night, we went to the hotel to play pool, have a beer, and hang out with the monkey. Seriously. Creepy.
Mosquito Bites: 2
Final Score: Amy 1, Honduras 0, Mom 1
